Haut-Médoc is part of Bordeaux's Left Bank, which lies west of the Gironde estuary and is planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, On the Right Bank, Merlot is the dominant varietal. Château Coufran, like its neighbors, had mostly Cabernet vines, but year after year had difficulty achieving optimal ripeness in its grapes. In the 1930s, the Miailhe family, who owned the property, made the decision to rip up most of the existing vines and replant to the sturdier, earlier-ripening Merlot varietal. This was a risky move, considering the differences in terroir between the Left and Right Banks; luckily, it turned out to be a fortuitous one. The Merlot vines thrived; today, the estate is planted to 85% Merlot and boasts vineyards with vines that average 40 years old.
Today's wine is a stunning testament to terroir, thinking outside of the box, and an incredible vintage. Aged in French oak for 12 months (25% new), it is fleshy and opulent, with abundant flavors of blackcurrants and blackberries interwoven with notes of graphite, leather, soy, plum, and licorice. The tannins are nicely integrated but still firm, so give this beauty a brief decanting or cellar it for a few years and enjoy its evolution over time.
