PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
Château du Glana was founded in 1870 and consists of 59 hectares of prime Left Bank vineyards located near Château Lagrange and Château Talbot. Owned by the Meffré family for generations, Jean-Paul Meffré currently manages the estate. The vineyards are planted 65% to Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% to Merlot. The vines average over 25 years of age and the vineyards themselves consist primarily of gravel-based soils.

Winemaking here is quite traditional with the initial fermentation taking place in cement vats and malolactic fermentation taking place in tanks. The wine has been aged for 12 months in a combination of new (40%) French oak barrels with the balance aged in second pass French oak. Total production for Château du Glana is just 24,000 cases, which is on the smaller side for Saint Julien. This AOC is home to such famous estates as Château Leoville-Las-Cases and Château Beychevelle, properties which regularly sell for as much as $100-$150 per bottle!!

At seven years of age, the 2013 Chateau du Glana is just entering the sweet spot of its peak drinkability. While very enjoyable immediately upon pulling the cork at this point, it will benefit from about an hour in a decanter. The wine itself displays a deep extracted black purple hue in the glass. The aromatics are elegant, with developed notes of mocha interplayed with ripe blackcurrant & blackberry characters. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and expressive from beginning to end, with initial notes of sandalwood and black fruits giving way to a lushly-textured mid-palate. This wine is quite long at the back end as the lingering tannins bring the wine to a satisfyingly clean finish.
