Situated on the west bank of the Gironde River, in the Haut-Médoc, north of Saint-Julien and south of Saint Estèphe, Pauillac has well-drained soils that make magic with the predominant varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Carmenère, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. Although many châteaux have developed distinctive styles over the decades, Pauillac wines have common characteristics; they are rich, powerful, and redolent with black fruit characters and cedar notes. Today's Buy the Pair Feature, the 2007 Château Haut de la Bécade Pauillac, is a compelling representation of the Pauillac style.
Château Haut de la Bécade is owned by the Rainaud family, who have been making wine there since 1933. The estate is located near some of the zone's most well-known Châteaux, including Chateau Lynch Bages, Pichon Baron, and Pichon Lalande de Comtesse.
Today's wine is sourced from the Rainaud's 7-hectare vineyard from vines with an average age of 30 years. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc, it undergoes a 3-week fermentation, followed by 18 months in French oak. It is robust, powerful and quintessentially Pauillac, displaying aromas and flavors of cassis, blackcurrant, and black raspberry layered with notes of cedar and pencil shavings. Hints of violet and stony minerality are woven through the fruit on the palate. The tannins are supple and, along with balancing acidy, give the wine the structure necessary to age for another 10 years, although is it drinking beautifully right now.
