Chateau Peyros Madiran Vieilles Vinges Southwest France 2016

$16.80 SAVE 20$ COMPARE@ $21.00

PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
Peyros means "stony" in the Gascon dialect of southwest France, and there are indeed glacial pebbles dotting this vineyard in the lee of the Pyrenees. But it’s more likely the limestone soils that account for the racy minerality of this wine. Fifty year old vines guarantee concentration (hence the name Vieilles Vignes) as do the grapes themselves: 80% Tannat and 20% Cabernet Franc.

The estate was acquired by the Lesgourgues family in 1999. With the help of Emile Peynaud, Château Peyros was provided with stainless steel tanks. Also, a micro‐oxygenation system was setup in order to soften the wines made from Tannat. “Peyros” in Gascony language means a stony place, a strong characteristic of the terroir.  Château Peyros is located in the most southern part of the Appellation, on an exceptional terroir. Two main types of soil: Very dense clay and limestone soil with rolled pebbles. The Lesgourgues family are among the most dynamic in the French wine world. Perhaps best known for their Armagnac house, Chateau de Laubade, they also own two properties in the Graves, one in Madiran, and lease a fifth in the Cotes de Blaye. Arnaud and Denis make traditional wines that are the opposite of flashy. They aren’t made for quick tasting at competitions instead theirs are always the first bottles emptied at table.
The 2016 Château Peyros has aromas and flavors of red and black fruits layered with baking spices and wet stone. The freshness of the fruit characters juxtaposed against its richness and power make it a total winner!
