PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
The Saint-Roch vineyard is in the heart of Roussillon, in the south of France, halfway between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean Sea. The Lafage family has been growing grapes and making wines in the Roussillon since 1798. Seventh-generation winemaker Jean-Marc Lafage was raised in the village of Maury, where Château Saint-Roch winery is located. He made his first wines in Maury as a teenager under the guidance of his grandfather.*
Today's wine is a blend of 65% grenache and 35% syrah from old vines grown in soils of black schist and loam in the Agly Valley. Aged in a combination of oak barrels and concrete tanks for 14 months, it is a full-bodied, lushly-textured wine with aromas and flavors of blueberries and cherries laced with subtle notes of black olives, herbs, and dark chocolate - all on a silky-smooth frame. 92 points, Jeb Dunnuck:
"Blackcurrants, smoked herbs, licorice, and some meatiness all emerge from the 2019 Côtes du Roussillon-Villages Old Vine. It's medium to full-bodied, plush, and sexy on the palate, with a wonderful sense of seamlessness." (3/22/21)
