coppo-pomorosso-nizza-docg-piedmont-italy
Coppo "Pomorosso" Nizza DOCG Asti, Piedmont, Italy

Italy's Piedmont region boasts some of the world's finest wines, crafted by grape varietals that are just about perfect matches to their terroir. The DOCG of Nizza, located in Asti's Monferrato region, is widely considered to be the appellation that produces the hightest expression of the Barbera varietal. We are certain you will agree after one sip of today's sublime feature!

The history of Coppo is inextricably linked with the history of wine in Piedmont.
Established in 1892, Coppo is one of the oldest estates in the region. Founder Piero Coppo laid the foundations for a constant commitment to uncompromising quality, personally overseeing operations in the vineyard and the winery.*

As the decades went by, the company’s reputation grew, accompanied by an increased focus on quality: greater care in the vineyards, lower yields thanks to bunch thinning, elimination of pesticides, and growing attention to cellar processes.*

The 1980s were decisive for the rebirth of Barbera, and Coppo became the standard-bearer for wines made from this varietal. 1984 was the first vintage of what was destined to become the company’s signature wine, Pomorosso. It was the creation of this magnificent wine that gave Coppo the impetus to advocate for the establishment of Nizza as a DOCG; thanks to the estate's efforts, the region was granted DOCG status in 2014.*

The 2021 Coppo "Pomorosso" is sourced from south and southeast facing vineyards with soils of calcareous clay marl. Aged for 14 months in oak barrels, it has a nose of ripe red and black cherries, blackberries, and plums complemented by hints of violets, cocoa, and brambly earth. The palate is rich and concentrated, with flavors of blackberries and cassis layered with notes of tobacco, baking spices, tea leaves, and toast. It finishes long, with Barbera's signature juicy acidity that exquisitely balances out the ripe fruit characters.

Check out the press!
91 points, Wine Enthusiast:
"Royal purple pours like liquid velvet while fennel seed and star anise mingle with violet pastilles in a heady perfume.
