After working together at Cloudy Bay and finding they shared the same aspirations, James and Wendy Healy and Ivan and Margaret Sutherland decided to return to a more 'hands-on' approach to winemaking. Using fruit from the 80 hectare Dog Point Vineyard that had been purchased earlier by Ivan and Margaret, the two couples launched the Dog Point label in February 2004 with fruit from the 2002 vintage. To this day, the partners are involved from the vineyard to the winery and market place.*
During their careers, both couples have traveled and tasted wines from all over the globe, particularly appreciating Burgundy and the low interventionist style favored by many producers there.* Each and every one of their wines displays the influence that Burgundy's terroir-driven approach to winemaking has had on the Healys and Sutherlands.
