PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
Viré Clessé, located in Burgundy's Mâconnais region, was part of the Mâcon AOC until 1999 when it received the recognition it deserved and was granted its own DOC status. Its unique terroir, characterized by white and red clay on limestone rock, and its proximity to the Saône River, bring forth chardonnays that rival their counterparts from their more prestigious neighbors in Beaune. Wines from Viré Clessé demonstrate that it certainly pays to go off-the-beaten path when looking for well-priced, quality juice.

Founded in 1956 by André Bonhomme, the estate bearing his name produces wine from seven separate east-facing hillside vineyards located above the villages of Viré and Clessé in the Mâconnais across 11 hectares of land. André Bonhomme was influential in Viré-Clessé being upgraded to AOC status rather than just being grouped into the wider Mâcon AOC because his wines were head and shoulders above those in neighboring areas.* Today, the estate is run by André's grandson Aurélien Palthey.

In keeping with Bonhomme's objective to maintain varietal- and terroir-driven character in all of his wines, Palthey farms organically, and the fruit is hand-harvested. The wines are aged on the lees, and only natural yeasts are used in fermentation.

The “Les Forétilles" parcel comes from an elevated vineyard (close to 1,000 feet) with soils of mixed limestone and clay, very dense, with a lot of little rocks. This parcel is located very close to the village of Clessé, on a slope. Vines are 40 years old on average.*

Today's wine is rich and full-bodied, with aromas of Golden delicious apples, ripe pears, wild fennel, and honeycomb that follow on the palate, which is almost creamy-textured and has accents of clove, Honeydew melon, and the merest hint of limestone minerality - a study in elegant opulence.
