PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
Pierre Gaillard founded Domaine Cottebrune in the Faugères wine region. Faugères is an appellation in the Languedoc-Roussillon area in southern France. Pierre Gaillard has special interest in this region because of the high concentration of schist soils, a terroir that he has mastered in the Northern Rhone at his other winery.
Situated in the lowest foothills on the southern side of the Massif Central and overlooking the plain of Béziers, the vineyard of Faugères extends across a soil of brown schist and benefits, thanks to its altitude, from a micro-climate, much more moderate than on the plain. As a result, the wines elaborated in this particular area are fresher and well-balanced. The estate is situated on soils with steep slopes where the vine is planted at a high density (7500 rootstock/ha).
This Faugères Rouge is comprised of these 3 red grape varieties: grenache (40%), Syrah (50 %), Mourvèdre (10 %).
Pierre takes great care with his Faugères. He vinifies parcel by parcel and grape type by grape type. He is meticulous about allocating only the best parcels and the ripest grapes to the final wine. And, on top of all this, the Syrah is aged in 3- and 4-year old barrels to preserve freshness and not add tannin or wood flavors. The Grenache is aged in vat with no barrel exposure. He never filters.
Tasting Notes from the importer:
"Beautiful deep ruby/purple color with a sweet perfume of rocks, black currants, blackberries, cedar, licorice and tar. A full-bodied and wonderful expression of Faugeres"
