Héritiers du Comte Lafon was established in 1999 and is Dominique Lafon's trailblazing, biodynamic Mâconnais domaine. His world-class Chardonnays display what this magical region is capable of producing. Historically, the Mâconnais was known for industrially farmed, volume-driven wines. Dominique was the first Cote d’Or producer to invest in the immense potential hidden in those rolling hills by buying higher altitude, old vine parcels with the intent of letting this beautiful terroir reach its full potential.
Working with his long-time apprentice Caroline Gon, they have converted all of their vineyards to biodynamic farming and preserves the fruit and minerality of the region by using only larger, neutral wood for aging. Dominiques belief and passion have made Héritiers a towering beacon for fine wine in the Mâconnais, making his cuvées the benchmarks against which all wines made in the region are measured.
Now to the wine.
The "Clos de la Crochette" is sourced from vines planted in 1982 on a south-facing slope 200 meters high with clay and limestone soil. Fermented with indigenous yeast, it spends about 8 months aging on the lees in second and third use oak barrels.
92 points, Wine Spectator:
"Lemon, chalk and stone aromas lead off, adding apple and herb flavors as this builds on the palate. Intense and long, gathered together by a vivid structure. Drink now through 2023."
92 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Mingling aromas of citrus rind and peach with nuances of paraffin wax, blanched almonds, and white flowers, the 2017 Mâcon-Chardonnay "Clos de la Crochette" is medium to full-bodied, satiny-textured and charming, with good concentration and chalky extract, girdled by lively acids. This is another fine bottling from a very successful vintage for the Héritiers du Comte Lafon."
