Dominique Lafon may very well be the most highly regarded Chardonnay winemakers of our lifetime. After cutting his teeth making the wines of his family estate, Domaine des Comte Lafon in Meursault, he established Héritiers du Comte Lafon in 1999, his trailblazing Mâconnais estate. Here, he crafts wines that are widely considered to be some of the best in the region. Historically, the Mâconnais was known for industrially farmed, volume-driven wines. Dominique was the first Cote d’Or producer to invest in the immense potential hidden in the rolling hills of the Mâconnais by buying higher altitude, old-vine parcels with the intent of letting this beautiful terroir reach its full potential.
Working with his long-time apprentice Caroline Gon, he has converted all of his vineyards to biodynamic farming; he preserves the fruit and minerality of the region by using only larger, neutral wood casks for aging. Dominique's belief and passion have made Héritiers a towering beacon for fine wine in the Mâconnais, making his cuvées the benchmarks against which all others are measured.
Today's wine is sourced from one parcel in the north-facing lieu-dit En Chatenay. Vines are between 40 and 60 years old.
The juice is fermented with indigenous yeast in classic Burgundian barrels; the wine is aged for 12 months in seasoned barrels followed by an additional 6 months in stainless steel. It has fresh citrus fruit aromas, an unctuous structure on the palate with great elegance and concentration, and a long, sea-spray finish. Approximately 170 cases of this cuvée are produced each year, depending on the vintage. (importer notes)
92 points, Decanter:
"North-facing at 300 meters in Vergisson, which makes the vineyard pretty fresh for Pouilly-Fuissé, this is one of the two best examples of the appellation I've had in 2018. Stylishly wooded, tangy, and refined, with citrus and cinnamon flavors and engaging poise, this shows you what a great winemaker can do with top fruit from the Mâconnais." (1/19)
92 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Opening in the glass with notes of crisp yellow orchard fruit, white flowers, and toasted nuts, the 2018 Pouilly-Fuissé is medium to full-bodied, elegantly textural but tightly wound, with racy acids and good depth at the core. In the generally rather immediate 2018 vintage, this is one wine that will flesh out with a year or two of bottle age, even if it will be approachable younger.
92 points, Vinous:
"The 2018 Pouilly-Fuissé comes from a single 1.5-hectare vineyard in Vergisson and undergoes some aging in stainless steel. It has a steely, focused bouquet with razor-sharp precision. The taut, fresh palate displays wonderful balance. Very harmonious, with hints of white peach and nectarine toward the sustained finish. Excellent. (1/20)
