The Mâconnais is the region where value-seeking wine lovers should frequent for top-notch wines crafted from Chardonnay. Here, the wines are more modestly priced than those from the more prestigious appellations in Burgundy's Côte d'Or. The Mâconnais has a centuries-old winemaking history but has only recently begun to come into its own as a source of high-quality wines, despite a terroir that is similar to that of its northern neighbor. Marl, clay, limestone, sandstone, granite, and schist make up much of the soil in the Mâconnais that brings forth complex and beautifully balanced wines.
Domaine du Château de Pierreclos is a small, family-owned winery with 8 hectares of vineyards. The family's modest holdings allow them more time to lavish on their land and vines. They farm ORGANICALLY and have a non-interventionist philosophy regarding winemaking; they espouse lees-aging and eschew filtration. The resulting wines seamlessly blend richness with minerality.
Today's wine is crafted from 100% Chardonnay sourced from the AOC/commune of Milly-Lamartine in the Mâconnais. Soils are predominantly clay and limestone. The wine is aged sur-lie in seasoned, 500L oak barrels for 9 months prior to bottling. Expressive and rich, it beguiles the senses with aromas and flavors of peaches, apples, and lemon zest with accents of wet stone and honey. Almost creamy-textured on the mid-palate, it is laced with balancing, bright acidity that brings the wine to a long finish.
