Côte-Rôtie may be the premier AOC of the northern Rhône, but to dismiss the valley's lesser-known areas is to miss out on some seriously good juice. Case in point: Crozes-Hermitage. As is the case with the appellation's more prestigious neighbors, syrah has a centuries-old marriage with the land here that brings forth wines rich in terroir-driven complexity.
Michel Poinard is a 20-acre estate situated on the highest hill in the appellation. The vineyards are planted exclusively to syrah and the average age of the vines is 35 years. The excellent sun exposure, heat-retaining bedrock in the soils, and the estate's practice of cold-maceration of the grapes for maximum extraction result in full-bodied, fruit-driven, and powerful wines that reflect their origins. Today's wine, aged in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels, is resplendent with aromas and flavors of crème de cassis, blackberries, and black raspberries laced with notes of vanilla, brambly earth, and wet stone. "Cured meats, underbrush, spice, and leafy herbs all emerge from the 2015 Crozes-Hermitage, which comes all from the Les Chassis plan and was brought up in equal parts tank and barrels. Medium-bodied, rounded, and nicely textured, it's a complex, well-made Syrah to drink over the coming 7-8 years." (1/24/18)
