PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:
Domaine Porte Rouge was established in 2001 on an old vineyard site comprising 6 hectares by Bernard Friedmann, whose previous career was in wine sales. The estate has quickly become one of renown among serious wine lovers due in large part to Friedmann's decision to bring consulting winemaker Philippe Cambie on board. They rehabilitated the vineyards, saving most of the 60-year-old vines on the property. They embraced organic farming practices and became certified in 2014.

Today's wine is crafted from 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah; the dominance of Grenache, as well as the ripeness of the 2016 vintage, are evident as soon as you pop the cork. The wine envelopes your senses with aromas of cassis and black cherry; the plush, silky palate is layered with notes of sagebrush, herbs, and wet stone; a hint of black pepper on the finish is a lovely nod to the Syrah in the blend.

92 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Porte Rouge's 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a full-bodied, supple charmer. Thyme and chocolate notes add complexity to the ripe cherry fruit in this balanced, very drinkable offering." (8/31/18)

91 points, Vinous:
"Brilliant ruby-red. Intensely perfumed, spice-tinged red berry and cherry scents, along with a subtle incense quality. Velvety in texture, offering expansive raspberry and candied cherry flavors complemented by notes of white pepper and allspice. This wine is quite elegant in the context of the year, and it finishes sweet and long, with smooth tannins building slowly." (4/18)

91 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Bright, juicy black cherries and raspberries take center stage in this sunny, fruit-forward blend. Full-bodied and plump, it maintains freshness on the midpalate. The finish is moderately long, edged by pert tannins and delicate hints of smoked nut and earth. Ready to drink now, the wine should hold through 2026." (12/31/19)
