Ferraton Père et Fils is a fourth-generation estate currently operated by Samuel Ferraton, who cut his teeth working for renowned Rhône winemaker Michel Chapoutier. Michel purchased the Ferraton estate in 2004 and since then has worked with Samuel to convert the property to organic and biodynamic viticulture. Their partnership has resulted in an overall increase in quality; the entire portfolio of Ferraton wines is an impressive display of modern craftsmanship and Old-World reverence for terroir.
The 2016 Lieu-Dit "Paradis" is a single vineyard offering crafted from 100% Syrah. The Paradis vineyard is located in the heart of the AOC and is characterized by steep slopes with excellent sun exposure and soils composed of granite and loess. Aged for 14 months in French oak (10% new), it is dense and muscular, with generous black fruit characters, spices, pepper and hints of stony minerality.
2016 was a stellar vintage in the northern Rhône, receiving a 97-point rating from Wine Spectator:
"An admirable follow-up to 2015. A wet spring led to a late-running season; Hermitage was hit by hail in April, reducing the crop, yet hot weather from July through September spurred ripening and an Indian summer persisted through October. Reds are ripe, focused and pure; whites are scintillating, with freshness and purity."
94 points, Wine Spectator:
"This has layers of warm cherry, plum and raspberry compote forming the core, while apple wood, black tea, and iron notes run underneath. The finish has a fresh and racy edge, leaving a mouthwatering feel despite the heft." (11/2018)
93+ points, Jeb Dunnuck:
"From a tiny section of this steep, granite terroir outside of Mauves (they have just a tiny 0.5-hectare parcel here), the 2016 Saint-Joseph Lieu-Dit Paradis has pure, clean, classic notes of black raspberries, cassis, crushed violets, and liquid minerality. It's vibrant, fresh, and focused on the palate, with terrific granite character in its texture and acid profile. 93+." (12/2018)
93 points, Vinous:
"Glass-staining ruby. Highly perfumed black and blue fruit, potpourri and incense aromas are complemented by hints of exotic spices and smoky minerals. Seamless and penetrating on the palate, offering densely packed, appealingly sweet blueberry, cherry preserve, floral pastille and fruitcake flavors firmed by a spine of juicy acidity. Rich yet lively, finishing with impressive delineation, well-knit tannins, and outstanding, floral-dominated persistence." (9/2019)
