PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
Frog's Leap proprietor John Williams has an impressive winemaking resume dating back over 40 years, cutting his teeth at Stag's Leap and Spring Mountain Wineries before striking out on his own. His reverence for the old-school wines of Inglenook and Beaulieu Estates led him to Rutherford, where the well-drained, volcanic, gravelly soils provided the building blocks for their transcendent, terroir-driven wines. His purchase of the Red Barn Vineyard in 1994, followed by a partnership with the owners of Chavez Leeds Vineyard and the acquisition of the historic Rossi Vineyard in Rutherford Bench, set the stage for Frog's Leap to follow in the footsteps of these iconic wineries.
Among those who work at Frog's Leap, no wine is more celebrated than zinfandel. Crafted since Frog's Leap's beginnings, their zinfandels perfectly juxtapose opulence and elegance. Yes, they are ripe and full-bodied, but they are also superbly well-balanced, with subtle charms that sneak up on your palate and make a lasting impression. The secret, besides owning pristine, 40-year-old, organic, dry-farmed vineyards tailor-made for zinfandel, is the addition of petite sirah and carignane to the blend. These varietals, which have less residual sugar, are co-fermented in tanks along with the zinfandel. The finished wines have layered complexity with understated rather than brutish strength.
A blend of 85% zinfandel, 9% petite sirah, and 6% carignane, the 2019 Frog's Leap Zinfandel is the embodiment of the winemaking team's philosophy. Powerful yet elegant, it offers aromas of blackberries, mulberries, and sarsaparilla followed by a full, lush palate of cassis, black plums, baking spices, and vanilla laced with balancing acidity that brings the wine to a long and satisfying finish. It is zinfandel the way it should be!
