PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
After over 20 years of making wine in Tuscany, Fabrizio and Cecilia Piccin went in search of a new winery and settled in Basilicata, home of the Vulture volcano and some of the most distinct and age-worthy aglianico-based wines in Italy. They established the Grifalco winery in 2004; their sons Lorenzo and Andrea are at the helm now, with Lorenzo, a trained enologist, overseeing the winemaking and Andrea spearheading the commercial operations. (importer notes)

Their 16 hectares of organically-cultivated vineyards are deeply rooted in the volcanic soil of Vulture on hillsides between 450 and 580 meters above sea level, with vines up to 80 years old. Each parcel is harvested and vinified separately, creating wines that stay true to their distinct terroir.

The late-ripening aglianico varietal yields wines of exceptional elegance, especially in Lorenzo's hands. Today wine is a monovarietal sourced from vines between 10 and 30 years old. 20% of the juice is fermented in oak barrels for 12 months, with the remainder in stainless steel. It is a seamless blend of brambly red fruit characters layered with secondary flavors, including the unmistakable flinty minerality that speaks of its volcanic origins. Check out the press!

92 points, Vinous:
"A mix of sage, mint, and smoke gives way to crushed plums as the 2019 Aglianico del Vulture "Grifalco" opens up in the glass. Its textures are silky and refined, ushering in a polished display of mineral-tinged black fruits lifted by brilliant acidity and hints of citrus. Inner violet tones, salted licorice, and currants linger incredibly long as this tapers off youthfully structured and poised. The 2019 is classic to the core and in need of some cellar time. The Grifalco is sourced from all four of the estate's vineyards, blended for balance, and it's considered the flagship wine of the portfolio." (6/21)
