Students and Belgium natives Maine and Jean-Marie Guffens-Heynem left Flanders for Burgundy in 1976. Maine worked for local growers and Jean-Marie studied viticulture and winemaking. They managed a small estate in the Mâconnais, and by 1979 started purchasing vine parcels in the hills of Pierreclos. Today, their vineyard holdings cover 5.3 hectares in the area. In 1990 they created Verget, a negociant company, and in 1997 they purchased Château des Tourettes in Vaucluse. Here, they produce a variety of wines made from Chardonnay, Roussanne, Marsanne, and Viognier for the whites and Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Grenache for the reds and rosés. They farm their vineyards organically and are very focused on grape quality. The fruit is all hand-harvested and brings forth wines of superior quality that display individual terroir character. (from importer notes)
Today's Syrah is loaded with depth and personality. Medium-to-full-bodied, it is bursting at the seams with brambly blackberry fruits that are undercut by notes of wet stone. Silky textured on the mid-palate, it finishes long, with bright acidity.
