"The Horizon" straight bourbon whiskey is the newest offering from Hirsch Selected Whiskeys, blending two straight bourbons distilled in Lawrenceberg, Indiana. The whiskey is a combination of two distinct mash bills aged from five to six years comprised of 60-75% corn, far exceeding the minimum 51% percent corn required to be called bourbon.
Unlike a wheated bourbon, the second most prominent grain in your average bourbon mash bill is rye, followed by malted barley. The 92 proof spirit is assertive and slightly sweet and comes in a flashy flask-shaped bottle adorned with the Hirsch logo, a sextant. The instrument used for measuring the angular distances between objects and taking altitudes in navigation is representative of the spirit of the journey that one will inevitably embark on upon taking their first sip. The Hirsch brand has been around since 1974, having been responsible for a legendary Reserve 16 Year that once retailed for $1500 and sold on secondary markets for double or more.
Hotaling & Co. has since taken over the reins, sourcing and blending pristine bourbons distilled and aged in Indiana. The end result is a reasonably priced bourbon with a profound and lengthy flavor profile. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy and sweet, yet mellowed by the spice of rye and oak tannins. A protracted and contemplative finish with a pleasant heat rounds out the experience.
Color: deep amber
Nose: sweet cornbread, vanilla bean, oak, caramel, butter, honey
Palate: cinnamon, clove, allspice, oak, nutty, brown sugar, toffee
Finish: lingering with subtle sweetness, caramel, charred oak
The Horizon represents a trail-blazing adventurous spirit determined to continuously search out uncharted territory in life, and maybe drink a little bourbon along the way.
Bourbon Culture Magazine:
Nose: The nose starts out with classic bourbon flavors of caramel and oak. There are some cherry scents as well as the scent of melting butter on top of cinnamon raisin toast. It’s a really nice nose that doesn’t overwhelm with proof.
Palate: Rye spices such as cinnamon and clove mingle with fruit-forward notes of citrus and black cherries. The mouthfeel is slightly creamy with sweet notes everywhere. A nice touch of brown sugar and vanilla are followed by some light tannic notes of oak and leather.
Finish: After the sip is complete, a sweet caramel finish with some peppery afterburn linger around. The finish is not too complex, but it is nice and rounded. For being only 92 proof, I was surprised that some additional heat could be found on the finish but it was still pleasant overall.- Mike & Mike
