PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:
"Great wines are grown before they are made." This is the motto and the mantra at J. Christopher Winery in the Willamette Valley. Led by proprietor Ernst “Erni” Loosen and winemaker Timothy Malone, the team at J. Christopher takes a non-interventionist approach to crafting wine, guiding rather than dominating the process and letting the terroir determine the character of their finished wines.

Erni Loosen is The Erni Loosen, the name behind the internationally-acclaimed Dr. Loosen and Villa Wolf estates in Germany. Looking to expand his wine horizons and fascinated by Pinot Noir, he set his sights on the Willamette Valley and purchased the J. Christopher Winery as well as what is now the 40-acre Appassionata Vineyard in the Chehalem Mountain AVA. Today, Erni has holdings throughout the Willamette Valley and has a portfolio of award-winning pinot noirs, sauvignon blancs, chardonnays, rosés, and rieslings that showcase his Old-World style of craftsmanship.

Diversity and complexity are the hallmarks of the 2017 J. Christopher Volcanique Pinot Noir. It is a blend of 5 of the finest vineyards in the Dundee Hills AVA: Baptista Maresh, La Colina, Bella Vida, Charlie’s, and Abbey Ridge. The wine showcases the savory quality, the fruit purity, and the fine-grained texture that characterizes the deep, red volcanic clay of these hills. Four different clones make the source vine material: Pommard, Wadenswil, Coury, and Dijon 777. This cuvée is comprised of the top tier of barrels from the winery's numerous Dundee Hills sources. The blend of vineyards and clone types leads to a complex wine with aromas of black tea, rhubarb, ripe raspberry, and dusty earth notes. Medium-bodied but serious on the palate, it has sneaky density in an elegant package that features red fruits, Asian spices, and lovely echoes of toasty oak. (winery notes)

94 points, Wine & Spirits Magazine:
"Distilled from estate lots planted on volcanic soils, this really does smell like volcanic earth, in its smoky and mildly earthy notes. The cool red-fruit flavors seem plush at first but lengthen and become velvety after a day, spicy with hints of rooibos tea, cinnamon, and tar. For tea-smoked duck."

93 points, James Suckling:
"Floral notes with leaves and baking spices, as well as blueberries and a peppery edge. The palate has good concentration and fleshy fruit presence with finely cast tannins. Drink or hold."

92 points, Vinous:
"Vivid ruby-red. Spice- and mineral-accented red berries, candied flowers, and baking spices on the expressive nose. Sappy, mineral-driven raspberry, cherry, and spice cake flavors show fine detail and turn sweeter with air. Shows very good energy and solid thrust on the persistent, red- fruit- and floral-dominated finish, which is framed by subtle, slow-mounting tannins."

91 points, Wine Spectator:
"Lithe and expressive, this red builds structure and tension as it opens to raspberry, orange zest, and black tea flavors, finishing with polished tannins."

91 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"This is a red-fruited wine with a clean, clear focus. Bing cherries are the strength of the palate, with a minerally, dryly tannic finish."
