Much of Chablis’ soil is comprised of ancient Kimmeridgian marl, which is limestone-based, layered with marine fossils and imparts a distinctive mineral, saline quality to the wines. This is hallowed ground for Chardonnay lovers, where winemakers, guided by nature, use little or no oak so that this magnificent soil can make its presence known.
In a vintage like 2018, which was characterized by a spring and summer that were warmer and dryer than usual, roots had to dig deep for water and nourishment and also brought more terroir-driven characters to the fruit on the vines. 2018 Chablis are bit riper, more complex and absolutely delicious.
The 2018 Joseph Vernaison Chablis has aromas of citrus fruits and Honeydew melon. Lemon and lime dominate on the palate; that Kimmeridgian soil makes its presence known with layers of wet stone and subtle salinity. Accents of clove-driven spice is a nod to the subtle touch of oak used in the wine’s production; vibrant acidity brings it to a long and satisfying finish.
