A Kosta Browne Pinot Noir is the very definition of a "unicorn wine". This property literally has helped define the very best in what California Pinot Noir could be for over well over a decade now. Pinot Noir lovers and collectors scramble each year for the tiny quantities that make their way to the marketplace outside of the producers multiyear long waiting listed wine club.
While Kosta Browne has only been in existence for 20-odd years, it has quickly established itself as California Pinot Noir royalty. Proprietors and Pinot devotees Dan Kosta and Michael Browne started their endeavor by scraping enough money together to purchase a half-ton of grapes, a de-stemmer/crusher, and a used oak barrel. Despite these humble beginnings, their rise to wine super-stardom has been nothing short of meteoric.
Partly due to business savvy and mostly due to hard work and an unwavering commitment to excellence, Kosta and Browne have achieved what very few others have done: they have become standard-bearers against which all other California Pinot producers measure their success, with their wines achieving cult-like status among collectors the world over. Today, a mere 22 years after they started, they have vineyard holdings in California's most prized Pinot Noir appellations: Anderson Valley, Sonoma Coast, Russian River Valley, Santa Lucia Highlands, and the Santa Rita Hills.
The Sonoma Coast appellation overlaps with that of the Russian River Valley in many places and is similarly shaped by the ocean. Local geology can be complex, a direct result of being located on the intersection of two tectonic plates. For this wine, Kosta Browne utilizes vineyards that are particularly influenced by the Pacific Ocean. They are fortunate to work with some spectacular sites including Bootlegger’s Hill, Balleto Watertrough, Freestone Quarter Moon, Gap’s Crown, & Thorn Ridge. Together, they form a singular wine that is distinctively Sonoma Coast.
These vineyards lie in both the southern portion of the appellation and in the northern true coastal zone. In the southern area, the Petaluma Wind Gap and the San Pablo Bay drive cooler temperatures and help to produce a wine with deep flavors and rich texture. "The 2016 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast was aged in 44% new French oak, 16% concrete tank and 2% wood tanks, ranging from 10-15 months depending on the vessel. Medium ruby, it's scented of cranberry sauce, woodsmoke, loamy earth and forest floor with a core of red and black cherries and berries plus notions of pencil shavings and licorice. Light to medium-bodied and broody in the mouth, it has a sturdy, pleasantly chalky frame with seamlessly woven freshness to lift the earth-laced finish."
