The wine estate Domaine Le Roc des Anges is a rising star of the Roussillon, making unique, particularly flavorful, highly expressive wines. They prefer to identify their appellation as Côtes Catalanes IGP.
The extremely exciting and multi-faceted wines of Le Roc des Anges hail from the Côtes Catalanes appellation of southern France, within the larger AOC of the Languedoc-Roussillon.
Le Roc des Anges was founded in 2001 by Marjorie Gallet, with 10 hectares of old vines. She is now farming 25 hectares acres with her partner Stéphane Gallet.
The estate is named “Roc des Anges” as vineyards are planted on a vein of black schist all surrounded by a hillside of bright white quartz. Traditionally this area had always been called “Roc Blanc” because nature had given this land a dazzling vein of brilliant rock-crystal. Hence, Marjorie chose angles to symbolize this vein of quartz and Roc Blanc then became "The Angel's Rock" or Roc des Anges.
Marjorie has said “Our domaine “Le Roc des Anges” was born from this duality of the contrasting white quartz and black schist soils”.
Both Marjorie and Stéphane believe that their terroir is the driving force behind their wines and that they are merely stewards of the magical process of transforming fruit into wines that are pure expressions of their origins. They work the land from a terroir-driven perspective, respecting its nature and seeking its most sincere expression.
Says Marjorie: “We let time take its course, we let the vines and the wines lead the way, seeking the true expression of our terroir. Sun, wind, drought, stones - these are no longer obstacles to our wines. Light is not a barrier to freshness, ripeness is not only a matter of sugar, and heat has nothing to do with power. Our goal is to make distinctive wines, not to make the best Roussillon wines. When we were younger, we made warm-climate wines, now we make soil wines. The sense of place is a hallmark of our wines".
Le Roc Des Anges Syrah "Australe" features the fantastic aromas of truly superb Syrah! The nose is as high toned as violets that float above darker tones of warm earth. On the palate there are remarkably concentrated dark fruits with a sensation of amplitude as well as elegance. The finish is long and displays refreshing minerality. Intense and very beautiful!
The vineyards are schist soils planted to a venerable old clone of Syrah, this being the massal selection of “Serine” hailing from Saint-Joseph.
Their viticulture is organic, biodynamic
Winemaking: Mostly destemmed. Ambient yeast fermentation with pieds de cuve in closed concrete tanks for 7 days, then pressed and racked back to tank to finish fermentation. No temperature control. No punching down or pump overs. Aged in tank. No fining, light filtration.
