For 142 years, four generations of the López de Heredia family have devoted themselves to producing exceptional and unique wines. They are masterpieces which the founder of the company, Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, defined in the late nineteenth century as "Supreme Rioja". Vineyard care, scrupulous selection of grapes, extended aging in oak barrels and in bottles all contribute to making these illustrious wines with their exceptional bouquet.*
Lopéz de Heredia and its vineyards are located in Rioja Alta; the Tondonia vineyard sits just outside the town of Haro in a shell-like depression next to the River Ebro, which serves as a border with Rioja Alavesa. The soil is alluvial clay with a high proportion of limestone. The vineyard covers a total area of 170 hectares and produces an average annual yield of some 800,000 kg of grapes, the best of which are used in the making of reserve wines. In exceptional years, the very best fruit is made into grand reserve wines.*
The 2007 Lopéz de Heredia Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva is crafted from 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, and 10% Graciano and Mazuelo. Aged for six years in barrels, it is fined with egg whites but unfiltered. 200,000 bottles were made. Check out the press on this amazing wine!
96 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Following the appreciation of the 2007 vintage from María José López de Heredia, the red 2007 Viña Tondonia Reserva is showing great, revealing unusual finesse and elegance. The nose is a little reticent but nuanced and complex, a little shy rather than explosive. The palate is medium-bodied, and the tannins are very refined. This has to be one of the finest vintages of Viña Tondonia Reserva of recent years. 200,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2015." (7/28/19)
95 points, James Suckling:
"This wine spends six years in barrique (traditionally it needed six winters to stabilize naturally), before racking into large casks and then bottling three years before the expected release. Attractive, dark earth and dried sage with a strong aroma of attractive, rich dried cherries, as well as blackberries and hints of cedar, cigar tobacco, and fresh leather. The palate has a smooth array of fine but quite powerful tannin that builds seamlessly into the long, rich, dark cherry-flavored finish. Great wine! Drink or hold." (7/4/19)
