Marietta Cellars is a second-generation, family-owned winery with vineyards in Sonoma and Mendocino counties. Current owner and winemaker Scott Bilbro caught the winemaking bug from his father, who cut his teeth making wine purchased from local grape growers and acquired vineyard sites as he expanded his expertise and knowledge of the region's terroir. Armed with an enology degree from UC Davis, Scott spent years honing his craft alongside his father and was ready to take over upon his retirement ten years ago. Today, Scott makes bold, expressive wines that reflect his land, the climate, and the Marietta house style.
Today's wine is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec, 5% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot from Scott's vineyards in Sonoma's in Alexander Valley and Mendocino's McDowell Valley. Aged for 20 months in neutral oak barrels, it is "dense with buckets of black currant and cherry that are tempered with a dusty herbaceous quality. It is built to age and best with food." (winery tasting notes)
93 points, Vinous:
"The 2016 Armé is another superb wine in the middle tier of the Marietta range. Fresh, savory and super-expressive, the Armé has a lot going on. Black cherry, sage, lavender, menthol, and licorice give the wine striking savory nuance to play off the dark Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. More than anything else, though, the Armé is a superb value in California Cabernet." (May 2019)
