The Mastroberardino family is largely responsible for putting Campania on the modern world wine stage as well as preserving the region's culture by identifying its oldest grape varietals through DNA testing. Established in the late 19th century, the family winery was instrumental in bringing the greco varietal back from the brink of extinction. It is no wonder that this dedicated and passionate family crafts wines that are benchmarks for the region's other wine producers. Mastroberardino's cuvées have garnered numerous high ratings from the wine press as well as a small but very fervent legion of fans from around the world. A bottle of greco di tufo crafted by the Mastroberardinos is a delectable little piece of southern Italian history.
Today's wine is crafted from 100% greco di tufo from the winery's Novaserra vineyard, which is situated 1800 feet above sea level, has a southeastern exposure, and is composed of calcareous, volcanic soil with a layer of clay. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged sur lie for 5 months before bottling. A stunning expression of this southern Italian varietal, it is rich and round, with aromas and flavors of pears, apricots, peaches, and apples laced with honeysuckle, almonds, sage, and wet stone.
