Wine lover Gabrielle Mastrojanni established his estate in 1975 after leaving his career as an attorney in Rome for the rolling hills of Tuscany. This visionary bought the San Pio and Loreto properties in the hamlet of Castelnuovo dell’Abate in Montalcino because he saw vast potential where others saw neglect and ruin. He knew that the terroir here - comprised of clay, limestone, and sandstone - could help him craft wines that would rival others produced in Montalcino. He was so right! Today, his forty+-year-old vines coax exactly what they need from the soil and sun to produce concentrated grapes that bring forth top-notch wines.
The 2013 Mastrojanni Brunello di Montalcino is made from 100% Sangiovese and is aged in Allier oak for 36 months, followed by an additional 6 months of bottle aging in the cellar. Medium-to-full-bodied, it is a heady mix of red and black fruits, baking spices, cedar, and tobacco, all of which unfold on the palate layer by glorious layer.
94 points, Vinous:
"Brightly saturated full red. Captivating aromas of red cherry, sweet spices, orange peel, and minerals are nuanced and deep. Silky on entry, then bracing, penetrating and complex in the mid-palate, with outstanding laser-like focus and energy to the red berry, mint, licorice, mineral, and candied violet flavors. Superb tension coupled with outstanding clarity and cut make this one of the better Brunellos released this year. Finishes long and fine-grained." (3/19)
92 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Mastrojanni's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino reveals a very precise and focused aromatic profile. This is a signature touch from this outstanding estate that, year in and year out, produces some of the best Brunello you can buy. Wild berries and cherries rise from the bouquet in an elegant flutter. Those tones are followed by spice, leather, rosemary and medicinal herb. The wine is streamlined, polished and smooth in terms of mouthfeel. Some 54,000 bottles were produced." (2/28/18)
92 points, Wine Spectator:
"This is plump, with cherry, plum, iron, and tobacco flavors, nicely balanced by a dense matrix of tannins. Tips slightly toward the dry side on the finish, yet stays fresh and long. Best from 2022 through 2036. 1,170 cases imported." (6/15/18)
92 points, James Suckling:
"Plenty of dried fruits on the nose with cedar and flowers that follow through to a full body, layered tannins and an intense finish. Hints of raisins. Drink or hold." (11/27/17)
91 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Forest floor, tobacco leaf, new leather and balsamic aromas unfold in the glass. The structured palate delivers dried black cherry, prune marinated in spirits and star anise framed in firm fine-grained tannins. Drink 2021–2028."
