Fourth-generation Columbia Valley farmers Butch and Jerry Milbrandt honed their passion and knowledge of the land growing apples and tomatoes, but they knew that their farm was meant for grape cultivation and great wines. In 1997 they embarked on a journey to transform their land to vineyards, and in so doing became instrumental in the establishment of the Wahluke Slope and Ancient Lakes AVAs. Today, the winery has fifteen vineyards in the Columbia Valley and is widely regarded as one of the premium producers of fine wine in the region.
Today's wine is made from 100% Merlot sourced entirely from the Clifton Hill Vineyard, one of 20 vineyards located in the Wahluke Slope AVA. The Wahluke Slope has one of the driest and warmest climates in the state as well as several feet of sandy topsoil, which allows for excellent drainage of the vines. Aged for 24 months in French oak (35% new), this is a full-throttle wine with incredible depth that will beguile the senses with aromas of blueberries, cassis, and black raspberry that follow through on the lushly-textured palate. Accents of savory herbs, baking spice, vanilla, toast, and black pepper unfold layer by layer, and the wine finishes long. Robust tannins and an ABV of 15.5% require that you decant this wine for about an hour, but the wine's structure makes suitable for aging for 5-10 years.
