Montevetrano is a small vineyard in the hills near the commune of San Cipriano Picentino, not far from Salerno. Campania native Silvia Imparato indulged in wine as a hobby until she decided to rebuild her family’s vineyards in Montevetrano. She employed the skills of highly regarded winemaker Riccardo Cotarella; together they have created an outstanding, iconic wine named after its place of origin. Mountains surround the property, with the vineyards situated on gentle slopes facing south by southwest. The heart of the estate is a beautiful, ancient villa. In the first years of production, the basement of the villa also served as the cellar. Now the wine is made and stored in a new modern cellar that was built in 2000. (importer notes)
The 2015 Montevetrano Colli di Salerno IGP is named after the single vineyard from where it is sourced. It is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Aglianico and 20% Merlot fermented for 15 days in stainless steel tanks and aged in French oak for one year, followed by 6 months of bottle aging. It is full-bodied and redolent of blackberries and black currants accented by notes of tobacco, baking spice, leather, and licorice, with supple tannins and a silky mouthfeel. This is a wine worthy of a special occasion dinner or a spot in your cellar among the other majestic wines of Italy.
98 points, James Suckling:
"I love the polish and complexity of this red. It delivers subtle currant, dried herb, and spice character as well as a full body that is tight and focused. Such polished tannins. It goes on for minutes. One of the best vintages in years! " (10/2017)
94 points, Vinous:
"Deep purple-ruby. Rich aromas of dark plum, black currant, cedar, graphite, and minerals on the captivating nose. Then clean, fresh and juicy, offering flavors similar to the aromas and an extremely refined mouthfeel. Licorice and violet elements feature on the long, graceful, multilayered finish. Very promising young Montevetrano." (11/2018)
92 points, Wine Spectator:
"A rich and creamy red, with dark chocolate and smoke notes underscoring blackberry coulis and crème de cassis flavors. This is medium-to-full-bodied, bright and brambly, with sleek, chewy tannins firming the finish of graphite and spice. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Aglianico. Best from 2020 through 2028."
