PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:
In 1984 Neil Ellis started making wine from Stellenbosch vineyards not of his own in rented cellar space. With an eye towards expanding his portfolio to include wines made from other South African appellations, he set about developing relationships with top-notch growers throughout the country and in 1993 established a winery bearing his name 5 miles east of the town of Stellenbosch. His stellar portfolio quickly made him an industry icon and includes wines from the regions of Stellenbosch, Darling, Durbanville, and Elgin. To this day, his wines have garnered numerous accolades from the press as well as legions of fans.

Today's offer comes from vineyards in Elgin, one of the Cape’s coolest viticultural areas with an average temperature of 68°F during the month of February (summer in the southern hemisphere). A mere 10km from the ocean, the vineyards benefit from cold winters with abundant rainfall, followed by cool south-easterly sea breezes in the summer. The cool summers allow for a longer ripening period which produces grapes with concentration, fruit intensity, and balancing acidity. The soils range from white mineral sandstone and quartz to deep red clay.

Crafted from 100% Chardonnay, the wine was 100% barrel fermented in a combination of new and seasoned oak. 20% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation and was aged in French oak for 9 months prior to bottling. This is a beautifully balanced Chardonnay that is lush and satisfying yet light on its feet.

91 Points, Decanter:
"Pear, citrus, and green apple plus some struck match and a little vanilla on the nose. Lean and tightly wound on the palate, the finish is long and pithy. Matured for nine months in French oak, 25% new. Drinking Window 2019 – 2022." (6/19)

91 Points, Wine Spectator:
"Alluring, featuring creamed yellow apple and melon flavors gilded with light shortbread and salted butter notes. Ripe, but maintains a nice sense of detail. Drink now through 2021." (6/19)
