PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
Old Stake Vineyard has been planted to grapevines since 1901. Located in Lake County's Kelsey Bench AVA, it sits over 1350 feet above sea level and has red volcanic soils mixed with alluvial loam. Its elevation and greater proximity to the region's cooling breezes result in day-to-night temperature swings of fifty degrees. These conditions produce small berries that are ultra-ripe with balancing acidity.
Today's wine is a reflection of this ideal locale. It is blended with 24% merlot; the grapes are fermented together to enhance complexity. Aged for 6 months in a combination of French and Hungarian oak, it has aromas and flavors of black cherries, black raspberries, and cassis. The palate is rich and full, with layers of cocoa, ripe figs, tea, cedar, and savory herbs unfolding layer by layer.
