Ottella is the name of the estate that dates back to the 15th century and is named for a story passed down through generations that octuplets were born on the property. Today, the estate includes 25 hectares of vineyards in the Lake Garda region of the Verona IGT (the east side of the lake) lovingly farmed by brothers Francesco and Michele Montresor. The soil here is comprised of compact, glacial clay and the brothers believe that this is what creates the magic and imparts a complex yet subtle minerality in their finished wines. As frequent consumers of the Gemei (and more recently, their Lugana) we have to agree.
The Gemei is a blend of native varietal Corvina, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from hillside vineyards with excellent sun exposure. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in a combination of stainless steel and oak barrels; malolactic fermentation is carried out, which contributes to the wine's velvety texture. It is full-bodied, with generous aromas and flavors of cassis, blackberries, and black raspberries. Hints of herbs, wet stone, and vanilla unfold on the palate layer by layer. Tannins are pliant, providing structure without detracting from the wine's luscious, smooth mouthfeel.
