PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
Part of the larger Western Cape appellation, Elgin is situated in a basin abutting the Hottentots-Holland Mountains, which separate the Western Cape from Stellenbosch. Approximately 1000 feet above sea level and only 7.5 miles from the South Atlantic Ocean, Elgin enjoys the mist that rolls off the ocean in the morning, thus keeping the temperature cool and giving the grapes plenty of time to develop ripe, complex fruit flavors and bright acidity. These conditions, along with the varied soils that include gravel, sandstone, clay, and shale, are ideal for the cultivation of cool climate pinot noir grapes.
The Cluver family has been farming in the Elgin Valley for over 120 years and were visionaries who saw the region's vast potential to produce top-notch pinot noirs and chardonnays. Once they converted their holdings to vineyards, they worked diligently to promote the region and were instrumental in establishing it as a world-class wine destination.
Aged in a combination of new and seasoned French oak for 12 months, the 2019 Paul Cluver Estate Pinot Noir is a substantial yet elegant pinot noir with aromas of woodsmoke-tinged red fruits and a medium-bodied palate replete with flavors of brambly black raspberries, black cherries, and strawberries entwined with notes of savory herbs, tobacco, and the merest hint of vanilla.
