Pecchenino Barolo Cru Bussia Piedmont, Italy 2013

The Pecchenino family established their winery in the 1700s; current proprietors Orlando and Attilio employ many of the same viticultural practices as their ancestors: planting grass between the rows of vines to prevent erosion and increase biodiversity; eschewing chemical fertilizers in favor of organic farming; manually pruning the vines throughout the year as well as manual harvesting of the grapes; and using naturally occurring native yeasts for fermentation in order to preserve varietal character. The 2013 Pecchenino Barolo Cru Bussia is about as classic as it gets for Barolo. Today, Old School is the way to go!

The Cru Bussia is one of the most historic and prestigious single vineyards located in Monforte d’Alba, southeast of the village of Barolo. Here, Barolo wines are characterized by a potent structure, an extraordinary depth of flavor, and an uncommon aging potential. Traditional winemaking practices include long fermentation with native yeasts and a long maceration on the skins. The oak used for aging is not toasted and of the highest quality in order to enhance the distinctive features of the Bussia terroir.*

The 2013 Pecchenino Barolo Cru Bussia is ruby red in color with orange hues. The bouquet is intense and complex with notes of violet, red berries, licorice, mint and spices that follow through on the palate. It is rich and full-bodied, with great structure, firm tannins, and a persistent finish.*

93 points, Wine Spectator:
“Leads off with scents of graphite, mineral and menthol, giving way to flavors of cherry and black currant. Dense and powerful, with big, dusty tannins guarding the finish for now. Needs time. Best from 2022 through 2045. 225 cases imported.” (9/30/18)

93 points, James Suckling :
“Purity of fruit comes through with a plum, porcini and rose-petal character, which follow through to a medium to full body. A round and juicy finish. Delicious now, but will age nicely in the future. Drink or hold.” (9/24/18)
