PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:
A bit of background: Valpolicella is the delicious "bread and butter" wine of Italy's Veneto region, crafted from native varietals and traditionally vinified. Amarone is made from the same grapes but is like Valpolicella on steroids (believe me, in a very, very good way). The crown jewel of the region, Amarone is made from grapes that are dried in the sun on straw mats for 12-14 weeks - until they are almost like raisins - before fermentation. It is rich and concentrated, with deep, dark fruit characters, lush mouthfeel, and alcohol levels surpassing 15%. Incredible? Yes. Expensive? VERY!

You love decadent red wines but you are on a budget. What to do? The answer, my wine-loving readers, is Ripasso.

Valpolicella wines made in the Ripasso method are from the same region and are made from the same grapes. The pomace, seeds, and pips leftover from the Amarone wines are added to the Valpolicella for an extended period of maceration. This process imparts richness and depth of flavor and also boosts alcohol levels; what results is a wine similar in style to Amarone, but easier on the wallet.

Today's tasty treasure is a blend of 50% Corvina, 15% Corvinone, 20% Rondinella, 5% Molinara, and 10% Oseleta sourced from 20-25-year-old vines. Aged in Slavonian oak barrels before bottling, it is medium-to-full-bodied and redolent with aromas and flavors of cherry and blackberry jam, with hints of baking spices, licorice, and ginger.
