Chenin blanc has its roots in France's Loire Valley but has flourished in South Africa. It is as versatile, adaptable, and chameleon-like as its Burgundian neighbor, Chardonnay, and just like that other varietal, it is absolutely delicious in all of its incarnations. It can be lean and racy, with lip-smacking citrus flavors and zippy acidity, or rich and round, with a creamy texture and flavors of ripe apple and melon. It benefits from oak aging too; oak lends layers of complexity and a richer texture as well as increased age-ability.
The folks at Reyneke Vineyards believe that the path to progress lies in the past. Eschewing the accouterments of modern-day, large-scale farming and winemaking, they have adopted organic and biodynamic practices in the vineyards and in the winery. Herbicide, pesticide, and fungicide-free, they cultivate companion plants in the vineyards that will outcompete damaging weeds - and release ducks into the vineyards to take care of insects that can damage the vines. They use moderate amounts of copper and sulfur instead of synthetic fungicides and follow the lunar cycle when planting, pruning, and harvesting. Their non-interventionist approach to winemaking ensures that their finished wines are pure expressions of grape and terroir.
Today's wine is crafted from 100% chenin blanc sourced from beautiful organic vineyards 20 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. The vines are planted in loamy soils, which add a great flavor profile to the fruit. 80% of the grapes are fermented in 80% stainless steel, with the remaining 20% in concrete egg and seasoned oak barrels. The wine is bottled after 6 months of lees-aging. It is rich and round, with aromas and flavors of orange peel and baked apples, with hints of pineapple on the palate. Vibrant acidity on the finish balances out the generous fruit characters.
