PRODUCT OVERVIEW: 60% Grenache, 30% Cinsault, 10% Durif. Dry farmed. All 3 varietals are fermented separately with the Durif aged in neutral oak for 5 months. Swartland is a large wine-producing area 65 kilometers (40 miles) north of Cape Town in the Western Cape of South Africa. There is great interest in the wine of the Swarland region of South Africa at present, so creating a high value white that showcase's Swartland terroir was a three year quest for the Stratigraphy wine estate. 95% of the grapes grown in Swartland come from undergoing generational changes in ownership and leadership which has resulted in numerous small production, excessively priced wines with limited affordability appeal to the average consumer. Stratigraphy wines were crafted in hopes of changing this dynamic, by highlighting the unique Swartland terroir by overdelivering on quality to offer consumers a stunning value.
All three varietal components were vinified separately with all but the Durif’s fermentation completed in stainless steal tanks. This is essentially an un-oaked, however the Durif or Petit Syrah which makes up 10% of the blend, was fermented in “experienced” or neutral American oak barrels. The 5 months in neutral oak provides broadness and a rich texture for this unconforming red, without overwhelming the Grenache and Cinsault fruit.
