Ten Sisters Winery is named for the ten (yes that's TEN!) daughters of Robert and Mary King (who also had one son), fourth-generation New Zealanders and winery founders. Lifelong wine and food enthusiasts, they realized a dream of owning a winery and bought land in Marlborough long before it became known for its wine. Instrumental in putting Marlborough on the wine map, they quickly became known for their fruit-forward and fragrant wines. Today, Ten Sisters is run by the King's granddaughter Ellie Bartow and her husband Dennis.
The 2016 Komaru Pinot Noir is full of rich, ripe fruit yet light on its feet. Aromas of brambly red and black fruits give way to a silky-smooth palate dominated by red raspberries and black cherries. Accents of woodsmoke and sweet baking spices, vibrant acidity and a whiff of black pepper on the finish lend complexity and make the wine a satisfying aperitif as well as a terrific dining companion.
