PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
The delightful Terres Blonde Gamay is a second label of the Domaine de la Charmoise (the name of the domaine does not appear on this particular bottle, which is labeled simply as Terres Blondes) and is from the very eastern part of the Loire Valley appellation. The Marionnet family has owned Domaine de la Charmoise since 1850. Henry and his son Jean-Sébastien Marionnet are making exciting and high-quality wines, including this vibrant gamay from Touraine. The winery is nestled in the village of Soings, 30 km south of Blois, deep in the forests of La Sologne.*

The vineyards were replanted and expanded between 1967 and 1978 by Henry Marionnet, who became a renowned figure in the region in the 1960s. One of the first producers to make truly honest high-quality gamay in this eastern end of the Loire Valley, Henry had a very clear vision for quality and style that carries through to this day. His plantings cover nearly 150 acres of gamay and sauvignon blanc. Henry’s son, Jean-Sébastien, has been working with his father since he was 10, and he has now taken over, bringing a new perspective to the estate.*

The fruit for the Terres Blondes Gamay, named for the white-colored calcareous soils where it was cultivated, was hand-harvested; the liveliness of this red wine can be attributed to the carbonic maceration** fermentation process. It is medium-bodied and silky-smooth, with aromas of violets, red fruits, and smoke followed by a palate redolent with cherries, strawberries, and raspberries. Bright acidity makes it a lively party in your mouth - a lovely wine indeed!

*importer notes
** Carbonic maceration is a winemaking technique in which whole grapes are fermented in a carbon dioxide-rich environment before crushing. Most of the juice is fermented while it is still inside the grape, although grapes at the bottom of the vessel are crushed by gravity and undergo conventional fermentation. The resulting wine is fruity with very low tannins. During carbonic maceration, an anaerobic environment is created by pumping carbon dioxide into a sealed container filled with whole grape clusters. The carbon dioxide gas permeates through the grape skins and begins to stimulate fermentation at an intracellular level. The entire process takes place inside each intact berry. Ethanol is produced as a by-product of this process. (Wikipedia)
