The cuvées at the Vespa Winery and Estate in western Puglia are made by Riccardo Cotarella, one of Italy’s most celebrated winemakers. Cotarella became one of the most influential Italian craftsmen during the mid-1990s when he had a hand in creating some of the country’s most highly rated and collectible wines in Tuscany and Umbria. Known as the “Magi” or “Wizard”, he was also one of the architects of the Italian wine renaissance that took shape in the early 2000s and continues to this day.*

Vespa is a small “boutique” winery with just 25 hectares of organic vineyards planted in the iron-rich red soils of Madurai. Thanks to these unique soils and the maritime influence of the nearby Ionian Sea (a stone’s throw from the estate), Cotarella has been able to craft deeply flavored expressions of the varietals that are planted here.*

Crafted from 100% primitivo (known as zinfandel stateside) from 40-year-old vines in the DOC of Primitivo di Manduria and barrique-aged for 12 months, today's wine is a large and luscious pleasure bomb that will make you believe you hit a major wine jackpot! Aromas of cocoa-tinged black fruits lead to a rich, full palate redolent with flavors of blackberries, cassis, and black cherries entwined with accents of mocha, sweet baking spices, sandalwood, and licorice that unfold layer by glorious layer. Firm tannins are juxtaposed against a smooth palate, giving the wine structure without detracting from its lush, velvety texture.

90 points, Decanter:
"Produced from forty-year-old vines, some of them bush trained, Raccontami (“Tell me”) spends 12 months in barriques. Mellow, lingering, and velvety on the palate, with a superbly smooth tannic texture." (6/23/21)
