Wine lovers, if you think it is impossible to get highly rated 1er Cru Champagne for under $50 per bottle, think again! Such bottles are out there, and we know where to find them. Check out today's incredible offer!
One of the secrets to paying less for these beauties is buying "grower Champagne" or, more affectionately. "farmer fizz." These wines are made exclusively from estate-grown fruit. While this practice may seem commonplace, in Champagne only about 5% of bubbles are made this way; the vast majority are crafted with grapes sourced from other vineyards. What the French call "Récoltant Manipulant" Champagnes are special because they reflect the distinct terroir and the estate's winemaking style. You are actually getting a higher quality product for less money. How often can you say that these days?
Both Julie and Xavier Gonet-Médeville come from multi-generational winemaking families. Their Champagne estate was established in 2000, when Xavier’s family divided the family’s plots and he chose modest holdings of 1er and Grand Cru with the goal of making artisinal grower Champagne. Part of the group “Les Artisans du Champagne”, they pride themselves in being intimately involved in all aspects of winemaking from bud break to bottling; today’s wine is a testament to their non-interventionist yet expert craftsmanship.
The Champagne Gonet-Médeville Blanc de Noir 1er Cru Brut is crafted from 100% Pinot Noir sourced from a 3-hectare 1er Cru plot in Bisseuil, about 6 miles east of Épernay along the Marne River and canal. Bottled 7 months after harvest and aged for 3 years in bottle, it has aromas of green apples, pears, fresh red berries, honeysuckle, and brioche with chalky, mineral undertones. The palate full-bodied, with a persistent mousse. Flavors of ripe peaches, nectarines, lemon zest, blood oranges, and black cherries are balanced by bright, mouthwatering acidity. The finish is long, with hints of almonds, hazelnuts, and honey.

"The new release of Gonet-Medeville's NV Brut 1er Cru Blanc de Noirs is showing very well, offering up an appealing bouquet of crisp golden orchard fruit, honeycomb, warm biscuits and dried white flowers. On the palate, it's full-bodied, broad and vinous, with ripe but racy acids, good depth at the core and a delicate mousse. Concentrated and structured, another year on the cork will be rewarded by additional complexity, even though this is approachable now."

"The nose is like tart, fresh strawberry crushed on a toasted slice of rye sourdough. The palate also has that lovely tart edge of red berry, enticing, appetizing, juicy and aromatic. The palate backs it with salty, textured sourdough autolysis, slight pepper and beautiful depth. The mousse is fine and lends elegance to the expressive fruit and full-flavored mid-palate. It is that sense of chalky, salty depth that underlines the very clean, lasting finish."
