What does a winemaker with wanderlust do when he masters his craft at home? He spreads his wings and plants roots in another viticulturally bountiful region, where he can once again make magic with his favorite varietals. Today's feature is the luscious result of Anthony Hamilton Russell's desire to hone his craft in the Willamette Valley, and at 50% savings is a must-have for pinot lovers!
Anthony Hamilton Russell is one of the most famous names in the South African winemaking game. For well over 30 years, Anthony and his family have been producing wines that have helped establish South Africa as one of the great wine-producing countries of the world.
The Eola-Amity Hills AVA has a unique terroir that sets it apart from the surrounding Willamette Valley viticultural area. Ancient lava flows and tectonic shifts created the hills, and the weathered basalt soils here have proven perfect for premium winemaking. Free-draining and rich in iron, these soils serve to stress vines, lessening vigor and yield, which helps to concentrate flavors in the grapes.*
The Zena Crown Vineyard is positioned on a south-facing, multi-aspect slope of weathered volcanic soils and clustered amidst the most historic vineyards of the Eola-Amity Hills. The vineyard is comprised of 115.5 acres of vines divided into 48 distinct vineyard blocks, most of which are planted to pinot noir. With well-drained marine and sedimentary soils and elevation ranges from 278-700ft above sea level, this vineyard has all the building blocks to make expressive, complex pinot noirs.**
Aged in French oak for 14 months before bottling, the 2022 Hamilton-Russell Oregon “Zena Crown” Pinot Noir Eola-Amity Hills has aromas and flavors of cranberries, pomegranates, wild strawberries, and hints of nutmeg and sumac. The palate is taught and linear, pure, fresh, and energetic, with mouth-filling tannins and a great acid line. While this pinot noir is drinking very well now, it has the hallmarks of a wine that will benefit from further bottle-aging and come together beautifully over the next decade.***

"Expressive and precise, with handsome raspberry and pomegranate flavors that are laced with green tea and forest floor tones as this builds toward fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2032."

92 points, Wine Enthusiast:
"Aromatically, the wine is a red fruit paradise that mixes Bing cherry and raspberry aromas with wisps of violets, leather, and cinnamon. The wine's impressive tannic structure roughs up the roof of the mouth while supporting rich boysenberry pie, licorice, cedar, and black tea flavors."
