PRODUCT OVERVIEW/REVIEWS:
2016 was a near-perfect vintage in Tuscany's Montalcino appellation (99 points, Wine Spectator, 98 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 5 stars, Decanter Magazine) that brought forth powerful yet elegant Brunellos. "Warm but not excessive, with sufficient well-timed precipitation and significant diurnal temperature differences, the 2016 vintage offers structured, age-worthy wines with profound depth, soaring acidity, and plenty of drinking pleasure" (Michaela Morris, Italian Wine Expert, Decanter Magazine).
Franco Pacenti is located in the village of Canalicchio, just northwest of the historic town of Montalcino. The patriarch of the Pacenti family, Rosildo established the winery in the 1970s; since the late 1980s, it has been in the hands of his son Franco & his 3 children, Lisa, Serena, and Lorenzo.*
The estate is 36 hectares in total, with 10 hectares planted to Sangiovese Grosso. The vineyards, planted between 1980-2002, are divided into 6 parcels. They have a northeast exposure, sit at an average altitude of 300 meters, and have soils rich in clay.*
The Brunello here is vinified in temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks with extended maceration on the skins, then aged in medium-to-large Slovenian oak casks as well as French oak barrels*. Check out the press!
94 points, James Suckling:
"Flowers, such as rose petals, tile, and stone with some cedar and ash, all complementing the cherry character. It’s full-bodied and chewy with a tight, solid palate and finish. A little chewy now, but it will soften nicely with bottle age." (11/2020)
93 points, Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is fresh with rose petal, raspberry, leather, cedar, and dusty earth. The palate is medium-bodied, with dried cherry, tomato leaf, and clove, fine tannins, crisp acidity, and a stony mouthfeel. It was aged for 40 months in large Slavonian and French oak." (3/2021)
93 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The Franco Pacenti 2016 Brunello di Montalcino opens to tart cherry and cassis with more layers of spice, licorice, and balsam herb at the back. The wine unfolds to show a classic interpretation of the vintage with a mid-weight mouthfeel and bright acidity on the close. This Brunello draws its fruit from a site with soils that are especially clayey, and there is a touch more textural richness as a result. This is a 20,000-bottle release."(11/2020)
93 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Juicy and delicious, this opens with inviting aromas of fragrant purple flower, ripe wild berry, underbrush, and a whiff of camphor. On the savory palate, notes of licorice, blood orange, and coffee bean accent a core of Morello cherry. Taut, fine-grained tannins provide support." (5/2021)
92 points, Decanter:
"The Franco Pacenti estate is firmly in the hands of the third generation with 30-something siblings Lisa, Serena, and Lorenzo.....The 2016 initially comes across as more marked by wood than usual. Toast and vanilla are offset by sweet moist earth, truffle, and plum. The palate is graceful despite its richness and elevated by sappy acidity. Fennel and coffee infuse the finish." (3/2021)
