The majestic wines from Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, like those from its neighbors to the west, have helped to cement Tuscany's reputation as a world-class wine destination. Today's stellar offer is among the very best. Take this opportunity to score a three-pack (or 2!) of this spectacular, 97-point beauty while it lasts!
Poderi Boscarelli is among the most revered estates in Montepulciano, a family-run operation now in its third generation under Luca and Nicolò De Ferrari Corradi, with roots going back to founder Egidio Corradi's first harvest in 1962. "Il Nocio" is the crown jewel of the portfolio, a single-vineyard, 100% Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese) cru released only in the finest years, consistently earning scores in the mid-to-upper 90s and representing one of the most compelling arguments for Vino Nobile's place among Tuscany's elite appellations.
The Vigna del Nocio Vineyard, named for a centuries-old walnut tree on the property, covers approximately four hectares on the eastern side of the Cervognano estate, sitting at 900 to 1100 feet ASL and benefiting from warm breezes off nearby Lago Trasimeno. The soils are alluvial in origin, with clearly distinct sandy and clay zones that the winemaking team maximizes by harvesting and vinifying each section separately as individual cuvées, unlocking layers of aromatic complexity and textural nuance impossible to achieve from a single soil type.
Deep ruby in color with a youthful ga0rnet rim, the 2021 Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montepulciano "Il Nocio" has aromas of black cherries, ripe plums, and blueberries laced with dried herbs and violets. The palate is full-bodied and well-structured, with firm yet plaint tannins and flavors of blackberries and cassis layered with tobacco and wet stone. The food-friendly acidity that is Prugnolo Gentile's signature is layered throughout the palate. The individual cuvées, aged separately in French and Slavonian oak before final blending, lend a layered, multidimensional quality to the palate, with the crisp finish suggesting this wine is only beginning to reveal its full potential. The finish is long and and mineral-driven, with ripe dark fruit characters persisting. This wine is structured for the long haul, impressive now but built to reward patience over the coming decade.

97 points, Wine Spectator:
"Macerated cherry, strawberry, pomegranate, and sweet spice flavors are allied to a silky texture in this sleek, powerful red. Underscored by muscular tannins, with ample fruit for balance. The superb, complex aftertaste picks up mineral and wild herb elements. Still youthful, this appears to be a long-distance runner. Best from 2027 through 2045. 600 cases made, 100 cases imported."
97 points, James Suckling:
"A dark, austere wine with super-youthful style and vibrant complexity. Pure black cherries on the nose are allied with earthy minerality. Full-bodied with firm and velvety tannins, a very juicy and supple palate, concentrated fruit, and a crisp finish. The aftertaste is tight and thick yet ripe. Best after 2025."
