Introduction:
Allegrini is one of Valpolicella's most celebrated family estates, with roots stretching back centuries in the hills of Fumane di Valpolicella north of Verona. Palazzo della Torre is their signature mid-range expression — affectionately known in the trade as the "baby Amarone" — and one of the wines that brought international attention to the Allegrini name. Built on the same partial appassimento philosophy that defines Amarone, it delivers extraordinary complexity and depth at a fraction of the price, and has earned 90+ point scores from the world's leading publications more than 35 times across its history.
Terroir:
The grapes are sourced from the Podere Palazzo della Torre estate in Fumane di Valpolicella, a prized sub-zone of the Valpolicella Classico area in the Veneto, where hillside vineyards of volcanic basalt, limestone, and clay soils sit at elevations that temper the heat and concentrate flavors in the indigenous Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella vines. The DOC's continental climate — warm summers, cool autumns, and strong diurnal temperature variation — allows for the extended hang time and slow phenolic ripening that makes the appassimento process so successful here, producing grapes of exceptional concentration and aromatic complexity.
Vinification & Tasting notes:
This blend of Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, and Rondinella is a smooth, full-bodied cru wine made in an innovative Ripasso style. After the harvest, the grapes from the Palazzo della Torre vineyard follow two different paths: 70% of the grapes are vinified immediately, while the remaining 30% are left to dry until the end of December - think of this wine as a junior Amarone. The fresh wine made at harvest is blended with the fermenting juice of the dried grapes. This initiates a second fermentation and renders a more highly concentrated and complex wine. Maturation takes place in barriques for 15 months. The wine rests for 2 months before bottling and then ages for further 7 months in bottle before being released.*
Harmonious and expressive, this wine combines ripe plum and cherry with spicy, woody, and balsamic nuances. Hints of chocolate, coffee, and licorice enrich the finish, lifted by floral notes of iris and violet. A balanced interplay of gentle sweetness and vibrant acidity delivers structure, elegance, and a true reflection of the vintage.*
Press:
92 points, James Suckling:
"An intense wine with multilayered fruit, showing cherries, blackberries, plums, vibrant black pepper and nicely integrated vanilla. Chewy on the palate. Crisp, long acidity and firm, chalky tannins are well balanced with the fruit in the medium-bodied, savory finish."
92 points, Wine Enthusiast:
"The aroma sets you up for black fruit dessert with all those baking spices, while dried herbs add that Italian market vibe. Then the palate does a 180, trading richness for energy and freshness - when your expectations get a pleasant surprise."
91 points, Vinous:
"The 2022 Palazzo della Torre wafts up with a spicy mix of crushed violets, cedar box and cloves, giving way to dried black cherries. It opens with a pleasant inner sweetness balanced by crisp mineral tones and citrus-laced red berry fruits. This tapers off with excellent length and refinement, leaving the mouth salivating as a hint of tart blackberry fades."
