Chablis is for those who yearn to be transported to where their wine was made. Crafted primarily from Chardonnay, Chablis's character is derived more from its terroir than its varietal. This truth is what sets Chablis apart from other Chardonnays. As one winemaker in the region has said. "We do not vinify a Chardonnay wine, we vinify a Chablis. Chardonnay is everywhere; Chablis is only here!"
What makes Chablis unique is the region's Kimmeridgian soil; its expression is exquisitely played out in its finished products. Made of limestone, clay, and fossilized oyster shells, this ancient soil brings forth wines that are a compelling blend of flinty, stony minerality, delicate fruit, and racy acidity.
1er Cru Chablis are sourced from 40 specific, high-quality vineyards ("climats") with superior sun exposure, Kimmeridgian soil, and stricter production regulations than standard Chablis. More concentrated and age-worthy, these gorgeous wines deserve a place in every Chardonnay lover's cellar. Start with today's offer!
The Drouhin family has been crafting wine in Burgundy since the late 19th century and has built a reputation as being pioneers in the region. To wit: In the sixties, when the Chablis vineyards were all abandoned, Robert Drouhin recognized the potential of this region, which had been ravaged by phylloxera disease a century before. He was one of the first Burgundy producers who set about revitalizing the area; today's offer is a testament to his foresight and the family's reverence for the terroir of Chablis.
The 2022 Maison Joseph Drouhin Vaudon Chablis 1er Cru is named for the estate in Chablis purchased by Robert Drouhin. It was sourced from the Roncières, Mont de Milieu, Montée de Tonnerre, and Moireins 1er Cru Vineyards situated on either side of the Serein River. Fruit from each vineyard was harvested and vinified separately, then assembled. The result is a harmonious wine where the fruits of each site create a wine that is greater than the sum of its parts.
Vinified and aged in stainless steel, the 2022 Maison Joseph Drouhin Vaudon Chablis 1er Cru has complex and mineral-driven aromas, with notes of lemon peel, stone fruits, and white flowers. The palate is light-to medium-bodied, with flavors of lemon and lime zest intermingled with stone fruits, honeysuckle, and flinty minerality that unfold on the palate layer by glorious layer. Bright acidity brings the wine to a long and very satisfying finish. Honeyed notes will become more pronounced with age.
