With a history dating back to 1880, the Ascheri family name is nearly synonymous with Barolo. The family owns 16 hectares of vineyards across four different crus, only bottling cru Barolo in the best vintage. They produced brilliant, balanced cru Barolo in 2019, marking their first cru bottlings since the collectible 2016 vintage.
All the elements that make the best Barolo so seductive are in balance: savory earthiness, deep fruit, and fresh acidity enveloped by a powerful but elegant tannic structure that will reward patient cellaring. Yet, the Ascheri’s winemaking has gravitated toward shorter macerations and gentle pump-overs later in the fermentation process; this serves to soften tannins and preserve fruit notes, allowing approachability in these beautiful wines’ youthful years. (winery notes)
The 2019 Matteo Ascheri Barolo Ascheri is crafted from 100% nebbiolo from the Ascheri Cru in La Morra. It has aromas of ripe cherries and raspberries, candied fruits, tobacco, and sweet spices that follow on the medium-to-full-bodied palate. The wine is well-structured with excellent aging potential, yet its fruit characters, tannins, and acidity are beautifully integrated, making it suitable for enjoyment now with a brief decanting.

94 points, Wine Advocate:
"The Ascheri cru is located in the village of La Morra. The Ascheri 2019 Barolo Ascheri (with 3,000 bottles released and only in the best vintages) is smooth and silky in presentation with a nice buildup of aromas that starts with red berry fruit and roses and ends with sweet spice and candied orange peel. There is a vein of tart fruit on the close accompanied by fresh acidity." (8/24/23)
