Introduction:
Clos Henri is the New Zealand outpost of Sancerre's legendary Henri Bourgeois family, who spent twelve years searching the world for a site that could mirror their Sancerre terroir before settling in Marlborough's Wairau Valley in 2000. Now certified organic and biodynamic, the estate draws on ten generations of French winegrowing knowledge applied to New Zealand conditions — a combination that consistently produces some of Marlborough's most elegant, terroir-expressive Pinot Noir. The Estate Pinot (formerly labeled "Petit Clos") is sourced from the estate's glacial stone and windblown clay terroirs and earned 94 points from Decanter's Emma Jenkins MW for the 2022 vintage.
Terroir:
The Wairau Valley estate sits at the foot of Marlborough's southern ranges, where three distinct soil types — clay hillslope, glacial gravel, and windblown silt — each contribute different qualities to the final blend. The cooler, elevated clay sites add structure and earth; the free-draining glacial stones give brightness and minerality. Dry-farmed and organically managed, high-density planting in the French tradition encourages vine competition, restricting vigor and concentrating flavor in the berry rather than the canopy. Hand-picked in cool, early morning conditions to preserve fruit integrity.
Tasting notes:
The 2021 Clos Henri Estate Pinot Noir has aromas of red and black fruits, subtle floral notes, a hint of dried Italian herbs, and earthy complexity. The palate is medium-to full-bodied, with a juicy profile and excellent balance. Blackberries, cranberries, strawberries, and red currants entwined with smoky spice, tobacco, and wet stone glide across the palate supported by pliant tannins and a bright, refreshing acidity. Notes of forest floor and truffles give it a genuinely Burgundian character. The finish is long and mineral-driven, with a savory, earthy fade and lingering red fruit brightness.

92 points, James Suckling:
"Very perfumed with flowers and ripe strawberry aromas. Full-bodied with layers of fruit and fine tannins. Juicy at the finish. Lightly chewy with a powdery texture to the tannins. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."
