PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
Marie-Elodie Zighera-Confuron set up business in 2006 at her inherited estate in the village of Fleurie in Beaujolais, and renamed the domain Clos de Mez, a shortened version of her own name. Clos de Mez is a small estate producing wine from just 5 hectares of organically farmed vines.
Fleurie is in the center of the 10 Cru villages within the Beaujolais appellation.
At first acquaintance, Marie-Elodie Confuron seems an unlikely Fleurie vigneronne; she lives in Vosne-Romanée and teaches oenology in Beaune. But Marie-Elodie was born a Zighera, not a Confuron and hails from multiple generations of wine-making in Fleurie – a domaine that has successively been passed down the maternal line, and once extended to 80 hectares and needed 100 pickers. Now there remains about 15 hectares: 5.3 hectares are currently in production for Clos de Mez, 5 are in metayage and the last 5 are with the coop but Marie-Elodie does all the vineyard work in the coop parcels. She plans to (eventually) make domaine wine from 10 hectares.
The Clos de Mez Fleurie "Mademoiselle M" Beaujolais, France 2020 is a special bottling that was created in 2015, and the "Mademoiselle M" bottling of Fleurie embodies much of the soul of the Beaujolais estate named Clos de Mez located in the Cru village of Fleurie. This bottling represents the beginning of MEZ, and is symbolized with the first name of the producer's daughter Maguelone as well as the story of Fleurie. "Mademoiselle M" is a candid and spontaneous wine, personified by vintner Marie-Elodie as the sassy little sister of her 2 more serious wines named La Dot and Château Gaillard, also from her estate.
