PRODUCT OVERVIEW:
The Miolane estate is an ancient family-run business, which has been handed down through the generations and is located in the village of Saint-Aubin in the prestigious Cote d'Or area. Operations are run by Patrick Miolane, a larger-than-life character who took over operations in 1983 at the age of 20, and his dynamic, forward-thinking daughter, Barbara, who joined him in 2005. They make a perfect pair, each responsible for their own sphere of activity: Dad looks after the vineyard; Barbara is in charge of the wine-making and marketing.*

The estate produces wines from the AOCs of Saint-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Puligny-Montrachet, including premier cru, villages, and regional wines. The whites very much reflect the local growing conditions (the terroir), in particular the mineral quality of the soil.*

After studying at the Grandchamp agricultural school, Barbara acquired experience in the wine business on other estates, first at Chassagne-Montrachet, then in the Loire region, and finally in the United States. “It was important for me to see how things are done elsewhere”, explains Barbara. “There is a great deal to be learned from others, especially regarding the commercial side of the business. I have also had the opportunity to taste many different wines, and this has helped me to decide what I want to do here on the family estate.”*

Patrick and Barbara work the whole of the estate on "lutte raisonnée" principles, that is, conserving the environment and reducing chemical treatments to a minimum. They do not use herbicides, for instance, and each plot is plowed/cultivated to ensure that the soil is well aerated and receives plenty of oxygen. The vines themselves are carefully and expertly managed. The operation of "echitinage", removing a proportion of the new shoots to control yields is scrupulously performed from May onward. Harvesting does not begin until the grapes are fully ripened.*

Today's gorgeous wine is sourced from the “Les Perrières” vineyard, which is located behind the estate in Saint-Aubin and has a southeast exposure; vines were planted in 1986. Fermentation happens slowly, using only native yeasts, and the wine is aged for 12 months in oak barrels. Lushly-textured and aromatic, it opens with enticing aromas of candied lemon peel, honeysuckle, brioche, and wet stone. The palate is rich and creamy yet superbly well-balanced, mirroring the nose with flavors of lemon zest, honey, toast, wet stone, and baking spice that unfold layer by glorious layer. It is drinking beautifully now but will develop in the cellar for 7 to 10 years.
